      Mauritius, South Africa and Namibia ranked top among the 10 best countries in Africa to live in as a woman, according to the Women, Business and Law report 2021.

      The Women, Business and the Law (WBL) 2021 report is the seventh in a series of annual studies measuring the laws and regulations that affect women’s economic opportunity in 190 economies. The project presents eight indicators structured around women’s interactions with the law as they move through their careers: Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Parenthood, Entrepreneurship, Assets, and Pension.

      Each indicator is graded out of 100 and the final index score is graded as an average of the scores for each indicator (out of 100 as well), with 100 being the highest and 0 the lowest.

      Breakdown & Key Metrics

      The World Bank released its annual ranking report of the Best Countries for Women to live in. Over the last 50 years, countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have seen a record gain in their average scores of more than 30 points.

      The Women, Business and Law index measure the economic empowerment of women in each country of the world based on the eight selected indicators.

      About 39.14% of women in Mauritius are involved in labor force, which allows them to be part of the decision makers in the society. Although, women education attainment is one of the major contributors to their performance in investment, laws and business which justified their top position as the most preferable destination to travel or stay in Africa with a WBL index of 91.9.

      Mauritius recorded perfect scores (100) in Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Entrepreneurship and Assets indicators, 75 in Pension and 60 in Parenthood.

      South Africa recorded perfect scores (100) in Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Entrepreneurship and Assets indicators, 80 in Parenthood and 25 in Pension indicators for a WBL index score of 88.1. This ranks South Africa as the second best country for women to live in Africa.

      Zimbabwe ranks as the third best country for women to live in Africa in 2022 with a WBL index of 86.9. The country recorded perfect scores (100) in Mobility, Workplace, Entrepreneurship, Assets and Pension indicators, 75 in Pay, 80 in Marriage and 40 in Parenthood indicators.

      In Namibia, women's empowerment and gender equality is an integral part of its constitution. The country ranked 6th in the Global Gender Gap report for 2021 making it the highest ranked African country. On the WBL ranking, Namibia is ranked 4th in Africa with an index of 86.3.

      Namibia recorded perfect scores (100) in Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Assets and Pension indicators, 40 in Parenthood, 75 in both Mobility and Entrepreneurship indicators.

      Other countries that strongly advocate for increased women empowerment, development, participation and contribution to their economic development and growth and have a WBL index score of 80 and above are Liberia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Togo, Cote d'Iviore, Tanzania and Kenya.

      Takeaway

      The WBL index measures the economic empowerment of women in each country and how the laws and regulations put in place affect women’s economic opportunity.
