African Countries with The Most Satisfactory Transport Systems

The primary responsibility for providing adequate transportation infrastructure lies with the government. In some of the world’s most advanced countries, investment in infrastructure remains is always a priority.

Take Seoul, a commercial hub in South Korea, for instance; the city boasts 22 metro lines in 746 stations which connect the whole metropolitan area of Seoul and the Gyeonggi province (the most populous province in South Korea). Seoul also houses around 7,400 bus services, transporting approximately 5 million passengers daily. According to Seoul statistics, public transportation is responsible for 65% of the city's average daily traffic of 32 million trips – 40% corresponds to the metro system and 25% to the bus system.

In Africa, the conditions are slightly different. But regardless of the numerous variables, there are still countries that have constantly prioritised their transportation system.

      Mauritius ranks top

Mauritius has a satisfaction rate of 68, making it the African country with the most satisfactory transport system. Transport sector is the third largest sector in the Mauritian economy, contributing 13% to GDP, averaging “5141.31 MUR million from 2006 until 2022 (Trading Economics). As of 2020, Mauritius has 104 motorways, 1140 main roads, 950 secondary roads, 640 other roads, with 98% of these roads paved (StatsMauritius). Mauritius offers prime and cost-effective public transportation through buses owned by both the government and private individuals. They also provide taxis, car hire and boat services, as well as helicopter flights. The government of Mauritius is prioritising having a modern public transportation system. It recently partnered with Pwc India and Lit Transit to help improve the quality and capacity of its transportation system by using a new passenger information system (PIS).

      Other Key Performers

South Africa has the second most satisfactory transportation system in Africa, with a score of 66. One of most impressive transportation systems in South Africa is its rail network. Its rail tracks span “20,964 kilometres and transport about 530 million passengers per year, the largest and busiest network in Africa” (Expatica).

Egypt places third on this list with a score of 64. Egypt has a plethora of transportation systems, ranging from their efficient rail network (which links the Nile Valley, Delta and Canal Zones), buses (Egypt Bus Company, East Delta Bus Company, and West and Middle Delta Bus Company), and taxis as well as boats.

      • Tanzania placed fourth on the list with a score of 60
