      Egypt’s Cairo ranks the top business city in Africa ahead of Algeria’s Algiers, South Africa’s Johannesburg and Morocco’s Casablanca in 2022.

      Cairo ranks as Africa’s top business city

      Statista Global Business Cities Index 2022 research report identifies Egypt’s Cairo as the top business city in Africa ahead of Algeria’s Algiers, South Africa’s Johannesburg and Morocco’s Casablanca.

      The Statista Global Business Cities Index research uses an index method to rank countries. The index is based on a number of sub-indices such as Economy which demonstrates the economic strength and level of development of a city, Business Environment that focuses on infrastructure and logistics.

      Other sub-indices are Society which analyses population development, areas of education and standard of living, Charisma which highlights aspects such as tourism, culture and the environment.

      The selected cities of the world are ranked out a max score of 100, with 100 being the highest and 0 the lowest. The higher the index score , the more suitable the city is for businesses to thrive and vice-versa.

      Breakdown and Key Metrics

      According to data from Statista, Egypt’s capital city of Cairo is the highest placed African country on the Statista Global Business Cities 2022 with an index of 31.84, and the most suitable business location in Africa. Followed closely in second is Algeria’s city of Algiers with an index of 31.32. The city of Johannesburg in South Africa is the 3rd ideal location for businesses with an index of 30.33.

      Morocco’s capital city of Casablanca is fourth with an index score of 28.84 and Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi is fifth with an index score of 24.01. South Africa’s Cape Town is sixth, Ghana’s city of Accra is seventh and Nigeria’s Lagos ranks eighth with index scores of 17.14, 16.48 and 10.7, respectively.

      Takeaway

      The Statista Global Business Cities 2022 report evaluates cities from around the world that are economically relevant based on the most relevant data for decision-making at the corporate level. It shows that apart from population size and GDP, other factors are at play when determining the extent to which a city is suitable as a business location.
