Aviation Awards: Best Airport in Africa in 2021

Aviation Awards: Best Airport in Africa in 2021

South Africa takes a clean sweep of Gold, Silver and bronze medals with three of its airports occupying the top three positions on the list of best airports in Africa.  Cape Town International Airport once again won the prestigious Skytrax World Airport Award for Best Airport in Africa for the 6th consecutive year.

The airport won the Skytrax World Airport Award for Best Airport in Africa for the sixth consecutive year and the Best Airport Staff in Africa for 2021, an award last won by them five years ago, in 2016

According to the report, Cape Town airport emerged top, Durban King Shaka airport ranks second and Johannesburg airport ranks third.

With South Africa’s airports leading the pack, it shows that providing the basics (internet, good chairs, pleasant customer service) is essentially what all travelers need.

      The Top Three

Cape Town International Airport, South Africa

Cape Town International Airport tops the list of the best international airports in Africa. It is located in Matroosfontein, Cape Town and is the second biggest airport in South Africa and handles, on average, 25,000 passengers a day and 10.9 million passenger a year. It provides direct flights to major travel destinations across Africa, the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Durban King Shaka Airport, South Africa

The King Shaka International Airport is second of the list of Africa’s best airports and is located 35km north of Durban. The airport’s passenger terminal can handle 7.5 million passenger a year.

      Johannesburg Airport, South Africa

The Johannesburg Airport is famed for being one of the busiest airports in Africa and boasts a plethora of amenities to cater to its passengers. Its terminal can handle up to 30 million passengers annually.

      Other Airports in Africa

Mauritius Airport (also known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport) is fourth on the list and allows flights to 25 destinations in 20 countries. Rwanda’s Kigali International Airport is fifth on the list and handles almost twice its passenger capacity of 400,000.

Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa Airport of Ethiopia made the top 10 list of best airports in Africa. Daily, the airport handles over 450 flights per day and 5.5 million passengers annually.

Morocco’s Casablanca Mohammed V Airport (7th) and Marrakech Menara Airport (8th) also feature on the list, with both airports handling 10.3 million and 6.4 million passengers annually.

South Africa has two more airports, Port Elizabeth International Airport in 9th and Bloemfontein International Airport in 10th, besides its top three airports. This means South Africa has five airports featuring in Africa’s top 10 airports.
