      Nigeria’s Road Traffic Crashes In 2022, Fatality and Causative Factors

      Nigeria in 2022, experienced a significant number of road traffic crashes, totaling 13,656 cases, with devastating consequences. A total of 6,456 people lost their lives and 45,348 casualties in total. Speed Violation (SPV) emerged as the primary causative factor, contributing to 9,368 of these crashes. The statistics reveal a concerning picture of road safety in the country.

      Among the casualties, men bore the brunt, with 5,176 fatalities, significantly outnumbering the 1,280 women who lost their lives in these accidents.

      The top five states with the highest number of road crashes in 2022 were the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 1,803 crashes, followed by Ogun (1,114), Nasarawa (959), Kaduna (775), and Oyo (675). Effective measures, such as enforcing speed limits and educating the public on safe driving practices, can help reduce the toll of road traffic crashes and save lives in Nigeria
