Cocoa is an important agricultural commodity that comes mainly from tropical regions. The African cocoa industry plays a pivotal role in global cocoa production, contributing significantly to the economies of cocoa-producing countries on the continent. Concentrated in West Africa, a prominent cocoa-producing region, Africa accounts for more than 70% of the world's cocoa bean production, led by nations like Côte d'Ivoire (2.1 million Tonnes), Ghana (683 thousand Tonnes), Ghana (295 thousand Tonnes) and Nigeria (280 thousand Tonnes) in 2021.
The value of the exports of cocoa beans for Côte d'Ivoire was 3.8 billion US$, followed by Ghana with 1.51 billion US$, Nigeria with 779 million US$, and Cameroon 563 million US $ in 2021 (OCCO). Despite producing around 70% of the world's cocoa, Africa accounts for only 20% of the world's total cocoa processing. This shows the significant gap between production and value addition on the continent.
