VPN or "Virtual Private Network" encrypts internet traffic in real-time to help you remain private (or anonymous) by masking your identity online. VPNs can make it more difficult for third parties, hackers or scammers to track your online activity and steal your private data.

The use of VPNs, a novel technology of old, also allows you to bypass restrictions by re-routing your internet traffic through other servers. This ensures that all of your online traffic, including your physical location, remains hidden as you browse the internet. using the servers that grant you access to restricted websites.

Within Africa, the usage of VPN varies from country to country. Online restrictions such as the ban on social media platforms can increase the use of VPNs or some organisations restricting users from certain countries from accessing their websites. For example, the Nigerian Twitter ban between June 2021 to January 2022 boosted the use of VPN in the country.

The VPN penetration rate of a country is calculated by dividing the total sum of VPN downloads in a given country by its population and multiplying it by 100. The value arrived at is expressed as a percentage.

In 2021, Algeria had the highest VPN adoption index of about 27.4 percent. This means that about 12.03 million people of the 43.85 million population in Algeria downloaded a VPN in 2021.

With a total population of 11.82 million, Tunisia had the second-highest VPN adoption index of 22.60 percent in 2021 which indicates 2.67 million VPN downloads. Egypt had the highest number of VPN downloads at 15 million and a VPN adoption index of 14.6 percent to finish third. Ghana, in fourth, had 3.5 million VPN downloads and a VPN adoption index of 11.47percent.

Nigeria, in fifth, recorded the second-highest VPN downloads at 14 million and a low VPN adoption index of 6.9% because of its very large population. Kenya had 2.6 million VPN downloads and VPN adoption index of 4.9 percent to place sixth on the list. South Africa occupied the seventh position on the list with 3 million VPN downloads and VPN adoption index of 3.9 percent.
