Nigeria's export sector demonstrated remarkable growth in Q2 2024, with total exports reaching N19.42 trillion, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This represents a 1.31% increase from N19.17 trillion recorded in Q1 and a staggering 201.76% rise from the N6.44 trillion reported in Q2 2023. The data highlights the sector's resilience and its critical role in driving economic growth.
Spain emerged as Nigeria’s top export destination, accounting for 14.32% of total exports valued at N2.01 trillion. Following closely, the United States contributed 13.25% (N1.86 trillion), and France ranked third at 12.99% (N1.82 trillion). Other key destinations included India with 11.78% (N1.65 trillion), the Netherlands with 9.85% (N1.38 trillion), and Ivory Coast with 9.64% (N1.35 trillion).
Crude oil dominated exports to most of these countries, accounting for between 67% and 99% of trade volumes. However, China presented a notable exception, where non-oil exports made up 71.95% of trade, leaving crude oil at just 28.05%. This underscores an important opportunity for Nigeria to diversify its trade portfolio, particularly in markets showing a demand for agricultural and manufactured goods.
While the export sector’s impressive performance reflects Nigeria’s strength as a global energy supplier, it also underscores the economy’s heavy reliance on crude oil. This dependency poses risks, especially amid global oil price fluctuations, and highlights the urgency of economic diversification.
As Nigeria continues to leverage its export potential, strategic investments in innovation, infrastructure, and diversification will be essential to sustain growth and enhance the economy’s resilience in an increasingly dynamic global market.
