Proportion of Businesses Asked To Pay A Bribe by Region (2006-2021)

Corruption remains a global challenge that impedes economic growth, undermines trust in institutions, and hampers sustainable development. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) reports on the prevalence of bribery in different regions around the world.

According to the UNDESA report, Eastern and South Eastern Asia experienced a relatively higher proportion of businesses being asked to pay bribes between 2006 and 2021. approximately 30% of businesses in this region were subject to bribery attempts, the highest by any region.  While 21% of businesses in Sub-Saharan Africa were also affected by bribery incidents during the same period.
