In 2022, the world experienced a significant share of economic losses due to various natural disasters. The Americas bore the brunt of these economic losses, accounting for a staggering US$155.8 billion, which represented a commanding 69.60% share of the total losses.
This figure reflects the region's vulnerability to hurricanes, wildfires, and other catastrophic events that hit countries like the United States, Mexico, and several in Central and South America.
Asia, another continent prone to natural disasters, also endured substantial economic losses in 2022, amounting to US$48.7 billion. This accounted for 21.80% of the global losses
Meanwhile, Africa and Oceania shared a combined share of 7.60% of the global economic losses, with both regions recording US$3.8 billion apiece in losses. Both continents faced their unique set of challenges, from droughts and desertification in Africa to bushfires and cyclones in Oceania.
