Pesticides play a crucial role in protecting global crop production from the devastation caused by pests and plant pathogens. Nearly 50% of the substances applied are herbicides, about 30 percent are insecticides, while 17 percent are fungicides as reported by Heinrlch-Boll-Stiftung.
However, the usage of pesticides varies significantly across different regions, with some areas employing substantially larger quantities than others. South America and Asia are leading consumers of pesticides, with both regions reporting high usage in tonnes. Africa, in contrast, reports relatively lower pesticide usage than most regions.
In 2019, the global pesticides market stood at nearly 84.5 billion US dollars at an annual growth rate exceeding 4 percent since 2015. Pesticide usage is expected to grow at a rate of 11.5 percent to nearly 130.7 billion US dollars in 2023.
