      Market Capitalization: Leading Companies in Africa 2021

      Market capitalization, also known as "market cap", is the market value of a publicly traded company's outstanding shares. A company's market cap is calculated by multiplying the number of outstanding shares by the current market value of one share. The market cap is typically an indicator of the public's opinion of a company's net worth. It is used to compare, analyze and classify the size of a company among investors and analysts.

      The market cap is typically an indicator of the public's opinion of a company's net worth. It is used to compare, analyze and classify the size of a company among investors and analysts.

      Individual stock investors and investors in search of investment opportunities must understand the concept of market capitalization to know what companies are worth investing in.

      According to the Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives (IEA) in 2021, the top companies with the highest market capitalization in Africa were predominantly from South Africa, with only two companies emerging from Morocco and Kenya.

      Naspers, in 2021, was the largest company in Africa by market capitalization, with a market cap of 104.1 billion USD, followed by Anglo American with a market cap of about 53 billion USD, and Anglo American Platinum, with a market cap of 38.6 billion USD.

      FirstRand and Vodacom Group which are both African companies are fourth and fifth with 19.6 billion USD and 15.6 billion USD, respectively. Two other South African companies come next in the rankings; Impala Platinum Holdings and Standard Bank Group with 14.7 billion USD and 13.6 billion USD market cap valuations, respectively. Morocco's Maroc Telecom and Kenya's Safaricom follow closely with a 13.5 billion USD market cap,  with 13.2 billion USD market cap, respectively.

      The remaining four companies on the list are of South African origin. They are Kumba Iron Ore with 13.2 billion USD, Sibanye Stillwater with 13 billion USD, Capitec Bank Holdings with 11.1 billion USD, and lastly, MTN with 11.08 billion USD.

      From the data compiled, countries in Southern Africa dominate the list followed by North and East Africa.
